I REFER to the letter to the Messenger from David Oliver 'Raise Council Tax'.

I recall the introduction of Council Tax following the debacle of the community tax. With the introduction there was the avowed intention to incorporate a review intended to raise council tax related to the improvement of property values and therefore the council tax banding of properties which in turn would increase the council tax liability.

Had this review been implemented, then Council Tax payments would have steadily risen and ensured the maintenance of the funding of 'essential services' and there would not have been the current recriminations concerning the dramatic cut of 'essential' services'.

Why was the review wasn't implemented? Who knows - but it may have been it that it was felt politically damaging to local political parties of all hues and be reflected in lost votes BUT those Trafford Residents with a conscience and a sense of responsibility would surely have understood and accepted council tax increases necessary to maintain 'essential services'. No ifs, no buts, just understanding!!

Steady annual increases in council tax is surely more sensible than the need for a whopping immediate increase designed to restore the status quo for now AND the future.

Anyone thinking my comments would affect their pockets, shame on you, as you fail to consider the needs of the less fortunate. It's about time such selfish attitudes were consigned to room 101!

Those presently living in comfort not needing 'essential services' might fall into a situation necessitating requiring such services and if the boot suddenly fits that proverbial foot, they might ruefully reflect.
