THE Sale Friends of Bridgewater Canal had a successful morning on January 23 in cold, damp weather, but good company, picking litter along the canal from Sale, north and southwards.

Park life

FRIENDS of Longford Park are currently investigating the significant history of the park and the Stretford area, and would welcome information and memorabilia from local people. John Rylands, the major owner of the estate last century, which became a public park in 1912, was not only “King Cotton” in his day but also a regular, generous benefactor to the local community. Facilities such as a local baths, a public lending library and even a coffee house were provided by him for local residents. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if current large landowners and businesses were equally generous with their capital?
