I REFER to the article in the March 30 edition of the Messenger about the proposal to re-open the Irlam to Timperley railway line.

My understanding is that when a rail line has been closed for more than 20 years it has to remain closed.

This makes a lot of sense for this line because since it was in regular use many more housing developments have taken place on the route and to have a railway suddenly appear on your doorstep would be at the least anti-social, never mind the increased pollution from diesel and steam locomotives.

This track is ideal for turning into a nature reserve which it is already in essence given the massive growth of natural vegetation along the track over the years. Many mature trees would have to be cut down to accommodate this line.

There has also to be questions about the demand for such a railway with paying passengers. It's likely the promoters are wanting a line established so they can eventually run freight along it which is a much more anti-social business as trains will be thundering past mostly at night.

In general I am very suspicious about the viability of businesses which have to be promoted by failed politicians who have turned themselves into celebrities.
