TRAFFORD Council has proudly announced its commitment to promoting physical activity for all across the borough by spending many millions of pounds on improving the leisure centres but now propose to save £18000 per year by abandoning the maintenance of the park bowling greens and passing on the responsibility to the bowling club members.
These clubs have no financial resources and an average membership age of probably 70-plus. Even if the council give each club a payment of £2000 this proposal will undoubtedly lead to the closure of many of these greens.
I think it unlikely that the clubs will be able to find anyone with the equipment, the ability to dispose of the waste generated and the expertise to maintain these bowling greens for the proposed grant.
These bowling greens are a valuable resource and provide the only physical and social activity for many older people and as such should be encouraged and not put under threat in this way.
