Our little island’s optimum population was probably passed many years ago but for the Remain people to keep inferring that we must endlessly accept yet more migrants, when our schools can barely cope, when our NHS is struggling, when our social services are stretched and when our housing stocks are completely inadequate, is simply ludicrous.

If a recent Turkish opinion poll result was rolled out across the whole country then it implies that 12m Turks want, and plan, to come to Britain and Albania would almost empty the moment that horrendously poor country entered the EU so immigration could, quite conceivably, reach a million a year quite soon. Not the fabled, much-vaunted ‘tens of thousands’ but a million, and we couldn’t do a thing to stop them, whatever the number!

Within the EU we must take any and all migrants who want to come here, under this freedom of movement rubbish, no matter how grossly overcrowded we get. How barking mad is that? We are full now so how would we cope, in twenty years, with a likely population of more than eighty million, a quarter of whom won’t speak English as a first language, if at all?

David Cameron has negotiated that we can ask, yes, ask, for a small short-term respite from immigration but the EU would almost certainly laugh hysterically and say ‘Non!’

Could we realistically take in 12m Turks and several million destitute Albanians? In a word, no! Please, let’s get real!
