(RE: 'Save the UK, vote in', Messenger, May 26)

ALAN Lomas needs a reality check!

When he mentions we need to ‘influence’ the EU is he aware that, when we’ve tried to persuade others to back our views, the current record is voted seventy-two times, lost seventy-two times. What does that say about our ability to influence?

The EU admits it is accelerating towards a federal European super-state and every decision they make takes us towards that. We are continuously losing our sovereignty, our ability to govern ourselves, and several senior EU leaders have implied that David Cameron’s ‘concessions’ will either amount to nothing or be completely ignored as they would need treaty changes to make them function and those changes will NOT, they say, be allowed to happen.

Have you noticed how minimal, how utterly pathetic, the concessions we got were?

In other words, if we remain, we will soon be a mere 28th part of a European nation, funding most things but influencing very little, with barely any power to control our own destiny and no control whatsoever over our borders. Britain, as a nation with control over its affairs, will effectively cease to exist . . . never to get a chance to leave again.

And then, schools and hospitals will be swamped, the housing stocks wouldn’t have a hope of coping, the welfare system would be stretched to breaking point and that is only with the extra four million newcomers over the next eight years expected here . . . and that is before Turkey and Albania get their eighty-million-plus able to move here!

We are the fifth biggest economy in the world and even if there is a small, short-term, fall in business with the EU’s 500m people we can immediately trade much more with the Commonwealth’s 1.7BILLION people or the rest of the world’s SIX BILLION people, whilE re-establishing and, ultimately, increasing trade with the EU nations over the next year or so.

If you think we can govern ourselves, trading far more with every nation on the planet, as opposed to the EU restricting who we can trade with, vote to leave.

If you want this nation to be so crowded that it literally ceases to be able to function as it should, and with Brussels making every decision for us, to suit THEM and not us, vote to remain!

If you want our children to be British, and not members of a failing, almost bankrupt, European entity, vote to leave!
