MESSRS Moore and Tullis (Oct 22) have drawn attention to the problems in Trafford caused by the council being run by accountants and lawyers, who have no understanding of the civil engineering problems caused by roads designed in the Victorian era.

The underlying problem is that the vibration caused by modern heavy traffic is destroying the sewage piping system which did not have traffic of heavy tonnage moving constantly over it.

It is amusing that people are so concerned about 'fracking',yet the problems caused by modern traffic on the sub-structure of roads in places like Altrincham are far more pertinent.

No one would consider stopping the flow of heavy vehicles over sub-standard roads, the damage to which, causes long-term traffic hold-ups.

We now have Railway Street dug up yet again. Perhaps with a tiny bit of foresight by the council, this could all have been done when either the interchange or the hospital were being built, but perhaps this is too much to expect.

One thing that is to be commended is that the exit under Moss Lane from the station is being cleared, though why is should take 10 days is questionable. As this is a well-frequented thoroughfare, the work could be done 24/7, when it would probably only take about three days.

Still, I suppose we have to pay for Mr Anstee's recent trip to China, which is far more important.
