WORKERS do not want retirees to swim in the morning. Walkers do not want to share canal paths with cyclists. Runners are admonished for veering too close to dogs and their owners (without first shouting/clapping/playing mobile ring tones).

When did we become so myopic and divisive? Ignoring for now how fortunate we are compared to most on this planet, we have a huge amount of space to share and enjoy. The lines being drawn on these pages between different users of this space is hard to fathom.

There are selfish and ignorant people who walk (with or without dogs), run, cycle, swim, drive cars and so on. There are also a great deal of thoughtful and considerate people belonging to each category.

We cannot do anything about inconsiderate people but we can choose how we act, react and conduct ourselves.

That is a new opportunity we have each and every day. Next time you encounter someone who stands in different shoes to yours, do not judge them but smile and say hello.

Being ignored a few times is not painful but, with continued respect and friendliness, you will brighten someone's day - as well as your own when your actions are reciprocated. We could then keep these pages free to address more substantive issues.
