I WOULD appreciate the opportunity to respond to Mr David Lamberts concerning the willow tree in Sale, (Messenger, June 5).
The tree, which is located in Sale Moor, was a victim of the gales earlier this year.
It lost several large branches and it was subsequently discovered that further branches were in poor condition and likely to break in further gales.
Apparently the willow is a tree that is subject to becoming brittle over time so the Trafford Tree Unit took, I believe, the right course of action in not felling the tree but to severely pollard the tree to encourage regrowth of the crown.
I am informed that by next year, the tree will be well on its way to its former glory, once again enhancing the street scene.
One only has to look at the remaining structure to realise what a magnificent tree this has been and will be again.
Well done to the staff of the Trafford Tree Unit in preserving this Sale Moor landmark.
Cllr Philip Gratrix Sale Moor Ward
