IN the run-up to the by-election for Wythenshawe and Sale East, following the sad death of Paul Goggins, I had expected to get political propaganda and associated junk mail through the door.

However, I was outraged to receive a BNP leaflet, which was personally addressed to me.

I am fundamentally opposed to all that the BNP stands for and am furious that they have obtained my personal details to contact me in this matter.

I have previously registered with the Mail Preference Service and opted out of the public electoral roll to minimise the amount of unsolicited mail I receive.

But it would appear that political parties have access to the full electoral roll (and the BNP is not a member of the Direct Marketing Association) and are therefore able to bombard unsuspecting residents with their political paraphernalia.

Surely it should be possible to opt out of receiving such mail?
