PAT Eccles put in a man-of-the-match display to help Trafford MV to a 15-13 win against Aldwinians in the North Lancs/Cumbria Division.

MV went into the game off the back of three successive wins but knew they faced a stern test away against a team three places above them in the table.

The visitors started brightly and took play to Aldwinians with good early possession and forward play putting the home side on the back foot.

This brought early success as scrum-half Eccles comfortably converted a penalty on five minutes.

MV kept control for a period but Aldwinians were competitive and on 20 minutes, a good pick-up and drive brought a try for the home side's back-row.

It was a tight game but MV were back in front before half time thanks to another successful Eccles penalty.

Five minutes after the restart, Eccles kicked another penalty to extend MV's lead but the hosts were not finished.

As concentration waned and mistakes were made by MV, free kicks and penalties were conceded and Aldwinians benefitted from a close-range try on the hour to go 10-9 in front.

MV struck back 10 minutes later with Eccles again on the board with a superb drop goal to snatch the lead back.

Aldwinians were next to strike with a penalty of their own to sneak back in front by a single point with just five minutes remaining.

But it was Eccles again on hand to seal the points for MV with his fifth successful kick of the game ending the scoring.

It was an all-round good performance for the team who climbed to 10th in the table.

This weekend MV host Burnley at MacPherson Park and the game will be followed by a bonfire and firework display.

The gates for the post-match event open at 6pm and family tickets are £20.
