ASHTON-on-Mersey fell to a heavy 83-run defeat at Cheshire Cricket League Division One leaders Runcorn on a day when once again their batting form deserted them.

In a rain-reduced game Ashton’s decision to bowl first was understandable, although muddy patches at one end forced the opening bowlers to operate at reduced pace.

Runcorn’s overseas star, Jordan Grobbelaar, was once again the key man. The former Kwazulu Natal Under-19s player hit a fluent 49 before falling to James Marshall.

With contributions from the other Runcorn batsmen, the final tally of 163 was probably about par on the day. Andy Roscow picked up late wickets to finish with 4-18.

In reply, Ashton openers Alex O’Gara and Tom Scott set off brightly, with O’Gara taking on Grobbelaar to great effect.

But the introduction of spin saw Ashton struggle. Throwing away their fine start, the batsmen played a series of poor shots which saw Ashton bowled out for just 80.

D J McNamara (4-14) and Matt Tyrrell (4-25) took the bowling honours.

This was a poor performance and Ashton will look to regroup ahead of the home game against Hale Barns on Saturday.

With the second XI washed out the only bright spot of the weekend came from the thirds as they recorded a four-wicket win against Bollington at The Beets.

Bowling out the visitors for 138 (Harry Vogt 3-25) Ashton got the runs with overs to spare, with skipper Graham Parker top scoring with 41.

The ladies XI went down to a five-wicket defeat at Leigh, despite a fine 40 not out from Azure Wilkinson. Ashton finished on 117-5, before Leigh made 118-5.

Ashton are hosting a free women and girls' cricket night at The Beets from 6-8pm on Friday, September 9 for all players from beginners upwards with the emphasis on fun and enjoyment.
