TRAFFORD MV opened their season with a disappointingly heavy defeat at Broughton Park in the first round of the Lancashire Trophy.

MV always knew a tough game was on the cards but poor availability due to the bank holiday brought even bigger problems.

Taking the field without a recognised front row saw MV struggle for possession fr4om the outset, even on their own ball, and it was only minutes into the game when Park crossed the line only for the try to be disallowed.

The retreating scrum put all other phases of MV play under pressure and the result was becoming more predictable as the game moved on.

Park played good rugby from a solid forward platform and, with pace and good running lines in the backs, they made inroads into MV territory.

Constant pressure brought repeated opportunities to score and despite brave defensive efforts from MV's Andrew Moore and Stuart Crampton, the tries came at regular intervals.

Youngster Greg Warren had an outstanding game at full-back for MV.

The final score of 53-0 was deserved and not flattering for Park, however a full strength MV team would have provided better opposition.

MV now need to regroup as they enter their league season with a home fixture against Workington in the Lancs/Cumbria League following their promotion.

MV have a number of players returning from their summer break and the team selection should be nearer a first-choice starting XV.

* Mini/junior rugby returns to Trafford MV on Sunday at 10.30am. The club welcomes all ages from four upwards.
