HALE Barns first XI produced a dominant display with bat and ball to convincingly defeat bottom side Poynton by five wickets at Brooks Drive on Saturday.

Dave Saddington and Peter Stubbs shared three wickets apiece before Shehan Fernando guided the team to victory with an unbeaten 36 to seal a positive performance from the team.

The hosts stamped their authority on the game from the off as Jordan Collins brilliantly ran out Rob Bowden for four to restrict Poynton to 4-1.

While fellow opening batsman Tom Berzins struggled to accumulate runs, Adam Williams arrived at the crease and immediately played with fluency to recover the innings.

Berzins was finally dismissed by Saddington for six off 33 balls and the big wicket of Williams followed soon after for 38 as wicketkeeper Ben Staniforth produced a sharp stumping off the bowling of Jack Wylie (1-26).

Saddington (3-48) then added two more victims to his tally as Barns threatened to skittle through the Poynton middle-order, with the visitors collapsing from 51-1 to 61-5 in the 20th over.

Mark Coram (37) and Joe Hopkins (13) patiently rebuilt the innings, putting on 49 together to shift the score onto 110-5 with 12 overs remaining.

But as they began to show signs of accelerating the scoring, both batsmen were sent back to the pavilion in quick succession by Callum Schora (2-10).

And the spinner was ably supported by Stubbs (3-13), who cleaned up the final three wickets to reduce Poynton to 126 all out.

In reply, the away side failed to make early inroads as Khawar Iqbal and Joe Cooper made an opening stand of 37 from 11 overs until Iqbal was run out for 22.

However, a flurry of wickets gave the game a different complexion as Barns fell to 55-4, with Adam Williams (2-28) claiming two wickets, including Cooper for 18.

But the nerves were eased once Stubbs and Fernando came together at the crease, with the pair steadying the ship to steer the home team towards the required target.

Having added 52 to the score, Stubbs was removed for 27, but Fernando continued to battle on despite suffering with a side strain.

The captain scored seven boundaries in his 36 not out, while Nick Lathbury (9no) played a stylish cover drive to emphatically secure a much-needed win with seven overs to spare.
