AN Urmston hockey goalkeeper has been picked for an England squad trial.

Alex Lay, aged 16, has been selected for the Futures Cup between October 29-31 where he is one of two goalkeepers representing the Pennine Pumas against three other regional squads (each with two goalkeepers).

At the Futures Cup, selectors will run the rule over all those playing to select the under-16s and under-18s national age group squad.

Lay is heading to the under-16 tournament and is the first Urmston player to reach this level since John Crossley back in 2002.

Crossley now plays in the National Premiership for Brooklands having moved in recent years.

Elsewhere, Robin Cooper’s second hat-trick in as many weeks put Urmston's men's first team back to the top of the league with a 5-3 win against Windermere men's first team.

Man-of-the-match Stefan Wasilewski helped himself to a delightful double before limping off in the Greens’ 11th consecutive game unbeaten while Kris Wood picked up a green card for a stick tackle.

Aaron Kelly salvaged a point for the men's second team as they drew 1-1 with Lancaster and Morecambe men’s second team.

Kelly scored a penalty stroke to share the spoils while defensive partner Josh Edwards showed why he is so highly rated with another commanding performance earning him man of the match.

Sully Ahmed and Tom Coxon found themselves in hot water as they picked up a green card for a stick tackle and yellow card for dissent respectively.
