TRAFFORD Metro Swimming Club was awarded the Club of the Year at the 2012 Trafford Sports Awards.

The awards, now in their 11th year, are organised and run by Trafford Community Leisure Trust in association with Trafford Sports Council and recognise sporting excellence throughout the borough.

Trafford Metro were up against stiff competition from the short listed clubs Skillz FC and the Children’s Synchronised Ice Skating Team.

Fifteen-year-old youth squad swimmer Craig McNeil was awarded the Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year.

Craig has swum with the club since he was eight-years-old. He was the top boy at the North West disability championships and competed in the UK School Games finishing sixth in the 200 metres individual medley and fourth in the 100 metres butterfly.

Craig’s dedicated efforts have earned him a place on the Trafford Roll of Honour displayed in Stretford Leisure Centre.

The Masters section of the club were also recognised for their fantastic achievements during the last year as nine swimmers were inducted into the Roll of Honour for breaking three world relay records. The women's team of Emma Ross, Rebecca Lennon, Laura Bowden and Lucy Lloyd Roach competing at the British National Masters Long Course Championships in May won the 4x200m freestyle relay event for the combined age of 160+ setting a new world record of 9:23.78 and paring 15.18 seconds off the previous record mark.

Earlier in the year they broke the European short course record narrowly missing out on the world record.

In the same age category, but at the North West Masters short course championships, the women's medley relay team of Helen Sadler, Jo Bolton, Lucy Lloyd Roach and Sandra Skellern set a new world record of 4:47.76. Helen and Lucy were also part of the mixed 160+ years 4x100 freestyle relay team that included Steve Harding and Alec Johnson. Collectively they set a new world record at the Long Course Championships of 4:35.43 smashing the previous mark by 27.69 seconds.
