SALE United’s Powerchair squad were the only Sale United squad to successfully play football as the snow and ice took its toll on the outdoor fixtures.

On December 20 the seven man squad braved the winter weather to motor down the M62 to take on the Everton Powerchair squad where they were unbeaten in games against an experienced Everton side.

Toby Griffiths was in terrific form as he bagged seven goals on the day, with Jack Hassan getting a brace and captain Mark Chapman getting in on the act with a fine goal following a break away out of defence.

Four year old Patrick Kelly made his competitive debut in Sale United’s second game, and became the youngest ever player to represent the club. He put in some good tackles to thwart the Everton team as they put in some very good attacking moves. In all the boys won three games, drew two without loss in a five-game friendly fixture at the Greenbank Sports Academy in Liverpool.

The Powerchair squad were formed in May this year and coached by Stewart Hamer. But the event also saw a successful managerial debut for John Gilmore as he steered the squad to their first ever success.

“It has taken a while for the boys to get to grips with techniques required to move the ball around, but the improvement over the past few weeks made me quite confident that we were ready to compete against other teams, who have been playing a little while longer than ourselves,” said Stewart.

Following the Christmas break the squad will resume training at the George Carnell Leisure Centre, Urmston every Thursday from 4.30pm and 6pm. Anyone interested in finding out more should ring 0161 905 3088.
