URMSTON inflicted a first defeat on table-toppers Upton to move to third in the Cheshire Cricket League Division One table.

Hosts Urmston won the toss and, electing to bowl first, made early inroads with Cole Turner (5-66) and Josh Edwards (3-44) striking to leave Upton struggling on 58-5.

Resistance from number seven batsman Matthew Smith (58) and number nine Tom Marsland (57) ensured a sizeable 224 was reached after Urmston took the final wicket with two overs left, a factor that would prove critical later in the game.

Calum and Chris Turner started the chase well, seeing off the new ball and keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

After the partnership went into three figures Chris fell for a well-made 53 and Calum quickly followed for 58.

Furkhan Hassan and Lewis Jackson continued to keep up with the required run rate of six per over.

Hassan departed for 20, but Craig Grindley (23) and then Michael Ness (23) struck the ball well from the off.

With two overs left, 15 runs were required and the home side completed the victory with three balls remaining to climb to third in the table, Jackson steering the ship with an unbeaten 44.
