A GAME that had all the hallmarks of being a classic was cruelly cut short by the weather as Brooklands Cricket Club's first XI did not even get a chance to bat out their innings at Mobberley in Cheshire County Cricket League Division Two.

Batting first, home openers Nick Butters and Will Berisford-Ince put on 77 before the latter was caught behind off the bowling of Caleb Jones.

Jones was to have an eventful innings, eventually picking up 6-72 off his 15 overs.

Butters, however, continued to impress as he smashed his way to 156 before falling to Rob Leach (1-75).

By this time, Mobberley had raced to a daunting 259-4 and although the tail failed to wag the home side reached 287-8 off their 50 overs.

The weather worsened at tea and a fired-up Brooklands were unable to attempt a run chase and the match was abandoned.

The firsts will look to pick up another victory at home as they take on Stockport on Saturday.

There was a disappointing result for the seconds who went down at home to Warrington.

The Bears won the toss and skipper Alan Millington chose to field before the weather got any worse.

Warrington got off to a slow but solid start before Simon Swain fell to a fingertip catch by Paul Garnett off the bowling of Joe Gill (1-30) for just 15 but fellow opener Harley Barratt (65) and James Lewis (59) steadied the ship before the pair were removed by Cameron Buchan (2-29) and Alan Millington (2-39) respectively.

A quickfire 22 from Isaac Webster helped get the visitors to 193-5 off their 50 overs and as the players were inside for tea, the drizzle started.

After a brief delay, Brooklands got their innings started.

Richard Palmer departed early but fellow opener Nick Little hung around before he was eventually removed for 17 off the bowling of Simon Hewitt (3-31).

As the drizzle came and went, so did the home side's batsman and none managed to settle before being bowled out in the 26th over for just 56.

The seconds will hope to improve on Saturday when they visit bottom-placed Stockport.
