URMSTON is set to look blooming lovely this spring - thanks to the efforts of Urmston in Bloom with the support of volunteers and the Rotary Club of Altrincham.

The recently set up Urmston group has been donated 2,000 purple crocus corms by the Altrincham club.

And volunteers from Urmston and Timperley in Bloom lost no time in planting the corms in 18 planters across the town.

Residents can now look forward to seeing splashes of purple throughout the town when the the Ruby Giant crocus corms flower in February.

The President of the Rotary Club of Altrincham, Stephen McHugh, joined the volunteers planting the crocus corms.

The 2,000 crocus corms were donated by the Rotary Club as part of its Purple4polio campaign, which aims to eradicate polio in the world.

Mr McHugh said: 'Building on the success of last year's Purple4polio crocus planting, we purchased another 15,000 corms in 2017.

"Urmston In Bloom is the first recipient and I was more than happy to get my hands dirty and help them plant the corms."

Urmston in Bloom is an initiative of the Urmston Partnership whose hon secretary, David Mackereth, said: "These beautiful crocus will really get Urmston in Bloom off to a good start, creating an impact in the Town Centre and we are very grateful to the Rotary Club of Altrincham for providing them."

Rotary of Great Britain and Ireland are working with RHS Britain in Bloom to plant crocus corms as part of its Purple4polio campaign in. Rotary Clubs and the RHS in Bloom groups will plant the purple crocus corms in their regions. This planting will help Rotary reach their target of 10 million crocuses across Britain and Ireland. The corms are to help raise the awareness and funds for the Purple4polio campaign, part of the Rotary cause 'End Polio Now'.
