A COMMUNITY group is looking to launch an initiative that will help to keep Urmston spic and span.

The Urmston Partnership reckons the area is looking a little shabby - and is challenging residents to help to make it 'blooming lovely'.

The partnership wants to recruit volunteers for an Urmston in Bloom group, to tidy up the shopping areas in Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme.

David Mackereth, the honorary secretary of the Urmston Partnership, said: "Has anyone else noticed that the streets of Urmston are becoming overgrown with weeds and tree sproutings and that the town centre flower planters are a disgrace?

"It appears that Trafford Council no longer have the resources to maintain our local environment to the standard that we have become accustomed to, so perhaps it is time for we local residents to get together and do something about it.

"Provided that there is sufficient local support The Urmston Partnership is hoping to launch an 'Urmston in Bloom' scheme using volunteers to tidy-up Urmston Town Centre and the other shopping areas in Urmston, Flixton & Davyhulme.

"Both Altrincham and Timperley currently have similar schemes which have worked well for them to improve their local environment."

Anyone interested in joining the group should contact david@traffordevents.co.uk or call 0161 748 7296.

The scheme will need organisers and administrators as well as gardeners, so physical strength and mobility are not necessary.

It is expected that the work will mainly take place on Sunday mornings.

The Urmston Partnership is a not-for profit organisation made up of local businesses, residents, community groups and other local organisations. The aim of the partnership is to promote Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme as a great place to live, work and play.
