URMSTON Allotments and Garden Society celebrate their centenary with an exhibition at Urmston library.

Among the memorabilia are two photographs. One shows a garden party at the Mossfield Allotments in 1916 and the other, a similar event at the same place in August this year. Another celebration will take place at the Roebuck Hotel in September.

Also on display is a trophy donated by Walter de Frece, a director of the Manchester Palace Theatre whose wife was Vesta Tilley.

Committee members, Chris Turner and Barry Henshall, with a plot at Mossfield, pointed out a photo of the then named Urmston and District Allotment Association’s headquarters which still stands at 2 Railway Road.

Chris said: “The founder, in February 2016, was George Harrison Graham.”

The pair have visited the Windermere home of his grandson. He gave them historical papers and a photo of George with his children.

The blockade of ships by the Germans in the great war, prevented the import of food prompting Mr Graham to start the society. Members donated vegetables to a Red Cross hospital.

“Almost immediately, they ordered seven tons of seed potatoes and 60 loads of horse manure,” said Barry.

At the end of 1916, they had 70 members compared with 400 from eight allotments, today.

Chris said: “There is no longer a waiting list at some grouns so new members are welcome.”

Trafford Council’s website gives each secretary’s contact number to whom they should apply.

The price is £104 per annum for 300 square yards (250 square metres). Half price for over sixties.

The exhibition is currently on display at the Golden Way library during opening hours.
