FLIXTON Girls School's (FGS)Wellbeing Wednesday initiative has proved to be a big hit.

Organised by the school for students and their female relatives, as well as staff and former pupils, Wellbeing Wednesdays aim to support students and their families as they incorporate health into their lives in a fun and social way.

Nearly 100 pupils and female residents recently attended the first event for activities that took place included hair and beauty treatments, a pottery workshop, a healthy cooking workshop and a range of exercise classes.

Following on from that, many for the attendees completed 30-day step challenges. They used a step counter to record how many steps they completed over a 30 day period, and sent in their completed updates.

A name was pulled at random from those that entered the step challenge and the lucky winner was Helen Woodcock, mum of Mia Woodcock in Year 8.

Since taking up the 30 day step challenge Helen set herself goals to be fit, healthy and set a good example to her children. Helen said: ‘I try to stay young in body and mind for as long as I am able; which should ensure when I open my wardrobe door and pick out something to wear, I won’t have to worry about it fitting.’

Her motivation includes her work at Delamere School in Flixton. As a midday assistant, which fits around her children, and as a qualified level 2 teaching assistant, Helen is able to cover extra hours in the classroom when needed.

Helen aims to participate in every ‘Race For Life’, which this year she has signed up to at Delamere Forest. She will compete in the 5km for a charity that is dear to her heart.

Kay Statham, sports development manager at FGS, said: “Thank you and well done for achieving your goals, participating in Wellbeing Wednesday and completing the 30 day step challenge. Hopefully your prize of an IPod Shuffle will motivate you further to continue with your steps.”

The school's next Wellbeing Wednesday to be held on June 8 which will feature activities for the whole family such as rounders, tennis and arts and crafts.
