ST John’s Junior Football Club has taken its old kits from the playing fields of Turn Moss, Stretford, to the playgrounds of Lagos in Nigeria.

Every couple of seasons, the players grow out of the kits the teams’ sponsors have provided and so get new strips to wear.

But the old kits are put to good use - they are washed and collected up and sent to Africa for budding footballers there to continue to use.

Managers and coaches at St John’s were delighted to see photographs of their old kit in use by the children of Golden Stars Youth Club in Lagos. .

Paul Purcell, from St John’s, who helped coordinate the collection of the football boots and kit, said, “It is great to see another life for our kit.

"We would like to send kit every year, however the difficulty is the cost of shipping these things.”

St John’s will continue to make donations and hope to get support and fundraise to help with the cost of shipping. If you want to donate football equipment or can help with any shipping costs then please contact the club.

The man at the heart of this programme is Chuks Akuneto. He collects used football equipment and sends it to Nigeria, Gambia and Ghana.

Chuks said “I am glad that they are happy. Kindly extent my gratitude to them for their willingness to do more for these lovely children.

"It is celebrating our love for others."
