AN 11-year-old who completed an epic 180-mile walk from Wembley to Old Trafford blindfolded has smashed her fundraising target – with a little help from funnyman Jason Manford.

Alicia Wright, from Timperley, reached Old Trafford stadium on Monday June 6 after a ten day trek in aid of Old Trafford charity Henshaws, which supports children living with sight loss.

The Forest Preparatory School pupil was inspired to raise money for the charity as she has first-hand experience of the kind of help they offer.

Alicia herself is visually impaired, diagnosed following a routine sight test when she was five years old.

She set a target of raising £5,000 for Henshaws and, after comedian Jason Manford heard about her monumental task, her fundraising total soared.

Manford shared Alicia’s story with his 1,306,000 Facebook fans and the donations flooded in, with Manford getting the ball rolling with his own contribution.

Almost £9,000 has been raised so far.

Lisa Wright, Alicia’s mum, is a legal executive based in Old Trafford.

She said: "I can't believe we've made it, I’m so proud of my daughter. She's had to put up with my singing all the way and is still smiling. We've been overwhelmed by the reaction and kindness shown by people on our journey and we have made lots of new friends.

“The Facebook post from Jason Manford has transformed our total and we are so grateful to him and everyone who has donated. If Jason ever wants to come round to the house I'd love to cook him a meal to say thank you."

Lisa led Alicia on the walk, which took them through Bedfordshire, Towcester, Rugby, Staffordshire, Cheadle and Macclesfield, with dad Phil following behind them in the car.

Alicia was supported by Lisa, Phil and little sister Francesca as she crossed the finish line at the Old Trafford stadium.
