A SALE Friends group is bidding to bag a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

The supermarket has teamed up with Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative, which see grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and greenspace projects.

Three groups in each of Tesco’s 416 regions have been shortlisted to receive the cash award.

In November shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

The Friends of Woodheys Park is one of the groups on the shortlist.

The project at Woodheys Park will improve and care for a valuable area of woodland.

The woods are overgrown with exotic trees leaving little room for native plants and animals to live. The plan is to remove these trees; allowing light into the woods so that flowers, birds and insects like butterflies can thrive.

Sharon Redhead , a member of the Woodheys Park Friends group, said: “We are really excited to be shortlisted for a cash award.

"This project, developed with One Trafford Partnership, will create a more natural wood and improve access and safety in the park; discouraging antisocial behaviour. By increasing the types of plants and animals in the wood, the park will also become a learning resource for local primary schools.

I would encourage everyone to go and vote for this project and help us make a real difference in the community.”

Voting is open in stores until November 13. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.
