CARRINGTON Lane Methodist Church is to cease Sunday morning services after Sunday, July 31.
It will continue to have monthly evening services and there are plans to make it the centre of a Christian-based project in the future.
David Marsden, a joint church steward and organist who has attended the church since 1965 said: “Good Buddies, a day care nursery, baby unit and after school club, will continue to use the building on weekdays and the usually evening activities such as Keep Fit will continue as usual.”
David explained that the church had opened in November 1911 and the first sermon was preached by Dr Peake who was well-known for his religious book, Peake’s Commentary.
In 2000, the pews were removed and replaced by chairs and the front was rebuilt to make a glass entrance letting in the light. A new altar and pulpit were especially made at that time.
David said: “Our members feel sad there will be no more Sunday morning services
But are looking forward to finding other places to worship.”
The final service will be conducted on July 31 at 10.45 by the Reverend Richard Mottershead, Superintendent Minister of the entire circuit who is also Carrington Lane’s minister.
