THE Hale Millennium Mosaic has been demolished due to vandalism and is to be replaced by planters and greenery as well as being spruced up.

It was built by commercial fine art consultant, Paul Smith from Southport, to celebrate the Millennium.

He did so at the request of a partnership comprising Hale Civic Society together with local businesses, organisations, churches, schools and interested individuals.

It recorded the coming of the railways to Hale, houses designed by local architect, Edgar Wood, the link with Ringway Airport and Hale resident, Roy Chadwick, who designed the Lancaster Bomber.

It also contained the Hale Coat of Arms and the Millennium Clock, gifted to the people of Hale by the Earl of Stamford.

Denise Laver, chairman of Hale Civic Society, said: “Sadly the mosaic was used as a climbing frame and, over time, the tiles were picked off until it became Hale’s eyesore.

“Hale Civic Society has for years, voiced concerns about it. At last those concerns are to be addressed.”
