A MAJOR road running through the heart of Altrincham will finally reopen this Bank Holiday weekend – more than six months after works were originally due to finish.
Roadworks on Stamford New Road commenced in May 2016 and have been the cause of considerable disruption for the best part of a year.
The scheme, on Altrincham’s main arterial route, is part of a £6m programme of improvements to public realm space in the town centre.
Once complete, it will "seamlessly link each distinct area of the town, improving the town’s flow and making it easier and more pleasurable for visitors”.

Bosses decided on a new street layout for Stamford New Road, which includes the widening of footpaths, de-cluttering of existing furniture and planting of new trees between Cross Street and Regent Road.
Works were due to be completed in October but rumbled on past the target completion date.
And since February, both sides of the road have been shut to motorists – but the end is in sight.

Trafford Council has confirmed that the road will be reopened to two-way traffic from Saturday April 15.
But before the road reopens, a final phase will commence, which will see a full closure of Stamford New Road between Moss Lane/Cross Street and Regent Road until Wednesday April 12.
This is to accommodate final road surfacing works.

From 6am on Wednesday, access will be reopened for deliveries and for businesses who need access to private parking, and then from April 15, the road closure will be lifted.
The works are expected to be completely wrapped up by April 21.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.
