ALTRINCHAM company Cartwright has scooped the ultimate transport industry accolade for its apprenticeship scheme by winning the Motor Transport Apprenticeship of the Year Award.

Attended by more than 1600 people and hosted by TV and radio personality Jonathan Ross, the Motor Transport Awards is the premier event in the transport industry calendar.

Judges praised the body and trailer manufacturer for its forward thinking apprenticeship scheme which was launched in August 2012 as part of its investment in the future of the company.

A family firm, which this year celebrates 64 years in business, Cartwright has built a reputation for innovation, quality and technical expertise. At the root of its success are its employees, and Cartwright recognised that if it was to maintain this level of expertise then it would have to develop its own talent.

The solution was a ground-breaking apprenticeship scheme, of a scale unprecedented in the commercial vehicle industry, which has seen the company recruit 40 apprentices year on year with a further 25 being recruited for this year’s August intake.

Cartwright currently has more than 100 apprentices on site, many of whom are already forging successful careers both on and off the shop floor.

Targeted at 16 – 19 year olds, the Cartwright apprenticeship programme is one of the most progressive in the industry and has been acknowledged as a great success.

To further improve the programme and enhance the opportunities available to apprentices the company has recently appointed SETA (Stockport Engineering Training Association) as its training provider.

Mark Cartwright, Cartwright’s group managing director, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won the Motor Transport Apprenticeship of the Year Award and be recognised by the industry. “It is a tremendous achievement and one which is testimony to all the hard work which has taken place over the past four years since the programme was first launched.”
