TWENTY workers were evacuated from a Trafford Park warehouse following a chemical leak.

Six fire engines were called to the site, on Second Avenue, shortly before 1.25pm on Tuesday, October 29.

Crews from Stretford, Salford and Hyde arrived at the scene and found a punctured drum containing a chemical called isophorone diisocyanate, which is a cargo handling service.

The crews were quickly joined by fire engines from Moss Side, Bury and Bury’s Environmental Protection Unit, who between them were able to prevent the leak from spreading.

Station manager, Danny Settle, who was in charge of the incident, said: “A forklift truck had punctured the drum and it’s fallen over and started to leak.

“Crews wearing chemical protection suits and breathing apparatus went in and removed the damaged drum then used absorbent pads and dry sand from the Environmental Protection Unit to soak up as much of the spillage as possible.

“Firefighters worked hard and as a result were able to prevent the spillage from spreading into the drainage system and contain it to the warehouse.

“It was quite an involved job to deal with as we had to ensure cordons were in place and set up a decontamination unit for crews coming out of the warehouse.”

Police were called to assist with traffic management as Second Avenue was closed for a short time while firefighters dealt with the incident.
