TRAFFORD Council has taken action following pressure by Stretford and Urmston MP, Kate Green, for it to act on the number of HGVs using a Stretford road as a cut-through to Trafford Park.

The passing lorries are disturbing Barton Road residents because their noise and size is causing houses to shake as they pass, even though weight restriction signs at either end of the street should stop heavy vehicles from taking this route.

Messenger helped to highlight the issue on behalf of concerned residents earlier in the year.

In June, Ms Green contacted Greater Manchester Police who sent a Police Traffic Enforcement officer to visit Barton Road where they issued an alarming 17 tickets to HGVs falling foul of the weight restrictions in just two days.

Following a meeting with police, the council will now increase the visibility and number of signs on Barton Road informing HGV drivers of the weight restrictions.

Ms Green said: “The council agreeing to improve the signage is a definite step in the right direction for Barton Road residents who have had to put up with stressful noise levels for far too long.

“The police tell me they are continuing to prosecute HGV drivers who are in breach of the weight restrictions and I hope that this, together with the new signage will help to solve the problem.”

Barton Road resident, Mr Anderson said, “I'm very pleased that Kate's contact with the council has meant that they will improve the signage on Barton Road by the end of the year.

“It's a positive step and one I hope encourages drivers to take the correct route through to Trafford Park.”
