FLIXTON Girls' School (FGS) recently held its first ever Wellbeing Wednesday and welcomed nearly 100 pupils and female residents to the event.

Activities that took place included hair and beauty treatments, a pottery workshop, a healthy cooking workshop and a range of exercise classes including salsacise, combat, street dance, cheerleading, belly dancing, family circuit and yoga.

Organised by the school for students and their female relatives, as well as staff and former pupils, Wellbeing Wednesdays aims to support students and their families as they incorporate health into their lives in a fun and social way.

Lisa Young, a resident who attended with her daughter, said: “The event was fantastic. The cooking sessions were really good and my daughter and I really enjoyed the whole event; there was a really friendly, enthusiastic atmosphere.”

Competitions at the event offered health and fitness prizes such as the exercise gadget ‘Fitbit’. One Fitbit winner was student Isabelle Mead, aged 12, who said: “Wellbeing Wednesday was a great bonding event for Mum and me. We enjoyed the cheerleading, salsacise and delicious stir-fry workshop. We’ve both used the electronic step counter provided at the event; it is really motivating to see just how many steps you can cover in a day.”

Kay Statham, sports development manager at FGS, said: “This launch comes after extensive consultation with our students and we’re delighted it was such a success. We already run Fitness Fridays once a month, and these take the theme just a little further, to make feeling good accessible and fun for all.”

The next Wellbeing Wednesday will be held on June 8 and will feature activities for the whole family such as rounders, tennis and arts and crafts.
