ST Ambrose College historians Naaman Carr and Oliver Riley were given a horrifying insight into the Nazis industrial genocide on a day trip to Auschwitz and Birkenau run by the Holocaust Education Trust.

Naaman Carr, 17, from Altrincham, said: “ Standing in the gas chamber was particularly harrowing for me, and the room full of human hair too was chilling. My great grandfather was Jewish and left Poland shortly before the war and fought in the Polish Free Army. It is something that we should all remember so we can ensure it is never repeated.”

The two top young historians were chosen to travel with a party from the north west because of they have been members of the Hale Barns' Catholic Grammar School's history club since Year Seven.
