A LEADING politician has described Trafford Council cuts set to be announced tomorrow as 'absolutely horrendous".

The Labour leader Cllr Dave Acton made his comments after he was briefed by the authority on the planned cuts.

The proposals come as part of Trafford Council's plan to shore up its budget by slashing £24.3 million from its 2015/2016 budget.

As part of an effort to save £17.8m, from the Children Families and Wellbeing budget, the authority is also looking to re-shape adult social care.

Cllr Acton said: "These proposals are savage and will affect every person across Trafford.

Taking £17.8m from the family budget will have a devastating impact on vulnerable people.

He added: "It's also a very worrying time for council staff who have already been hit hard by the austerity measures, and there continues to be no good news in Friday's planned announcement."

Trafford Council leader Sean Anstee said: "The authority will be announcing savings proposals for consultation for our budget next year. As always, we have sought to mitigate the impact on our staff, generate income and squeeze out even more efficiencies so that we obtain greater value for every taxpayers pound we spend."

According to Cllr Anstee, Labour opposition has failed to produce an alternative budget for the past two years.

He added: "Yet again we see them criticising the proposals without stating what they would do – that is an irresponsible financial policy from the opposition.

"We have a good track record of delivering savings and will continue to do so over the coming years as we re-shape the Council to target is resources at the most vulnerable and grow our economy to reduce demand on public services."
