WALKERS from St Joseph's Church, Sale, are gearing up to tackle a 30-mile charity trek.

Forty walkers, and 24 volunteer marshals, will set out from Beacon Hill, Frodsham to walk the Sandstone Trail to Grindley Brook, near Tarporley, on May 6.

The one-day event is held every two years to raise funds for charities. This year, funds are being raised for Help 4 Heroes and the North West Air Ambulance service.

The trail walk was launched more than 20 years ago by the parish priest, Father John Marmion.

Since that time, the walk has raised many thousands of pounds for charities including The Christie, MS Society, CAFOD and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Event organiser Peter McBride said: “The walk has now become an event that attracts both keen walkers and those who just wish to have a pleasant day out while raising funds for their favourite charities.

“Many walk the whole distance, which can take up to 12 hours, some half way to Beeston Castle while others do as much as they can.

“Over the years, we have encountered some interesting situations, which have become part of the adventure. There was once the irate farmer who wouldn’t control his dogs and ended up in prison. And a young curate was once attacked by a sheep, despite his attempt to give it his blessing.”

Last minute arrangements for this year’s event have been made and the team are prepped for the challenge ahead. Visit www.sandstonewalk.org for more information or to pledge your support for this year’s charities.
