A TRAFFORD MP and councillor are calling for action to prevent Government plans to scrap ASBOs.
The Government wants to replace the ASBO with Crime Prevention Injunctions, which would not result in criminal sanctions if breached.
They would only guarantee action if five different households reported the same incident.
Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, said: “I know the devastating impact anti-social behaviour can have on residents’ lives.
“The Government are taking an irresponsible gamble with our community’s safety by scrapping ASBOs.
“They are trying to sweep anti-social behaviour under the carpet even though it’s residents’ number one crime concern.
Cllr Jo Harding, Trafford Labour’s spokesman for safe strong communities, added: “Sweeping anti social behaviour under the carpet and reducing the teams that tackle it will compromise community safety.
“The Government should be building on the legislation already in place, which has been shown to work as opposed to starting from scratch.”
In 2010, 134 ASBOs were issued in Greater Manchester.
Ms Green and Cllr Harding are arranging a joint meeting of tenant and resident associations and neighbourhood watch groups to discuss the matter.
