A FATHER from Timperley is taking a large leap of faith for a cerebral palsy charity.

Wayne Starkey, of Ridley Drive, will undertake a charity skydive at Black Knights Parachute Centre in Cockerham on September 10, and has already raised more than £1,000 for Rainbow House Legacy in Ormskirk.

Wayne was moved to make the effort after the brilliant care the centre has given his three-year-old son, Myles, who weighed only 2lbs 10oz when he was born 10 weeks prematurely.

“They deal with children with brain injuries and other life-limiting disabilities from all over the north west, they’ve been brilliant,” said Wayne. “They don’t get any public funding, so it’s really important.”

Cerebral palsy, a brain condition that affects the movement and co-ordination, affects about one in 400 people in Britain, with around 1,800 babies born diagnosed with the disease each year.

Currently there is no known cure, and Wayne hopes that his effort and the generosity of the public will help to fund treatment centres such as the Rainbow House.

He said: “Obviously it’s a bit awkward going back and forth to Ormskirk, but there’s nothing in Manchester with the same sort of facilities.“Finding the Rainbow House Legacy has been really good - this skydive is kind of paying them back for what they do. The people are so dedicated to these children.”
