A PUB and a tyre retailer are standing in the way of a £100m redevelopment in Altrincham.

Altair’s joint venture partners, Trafford Council and Nikal, have been unable to agree terms with ATS Euromaster, on Oakfield Road, and the Bridge Inn, on Moss Lane to relocate the businesses and demolish the buildings.

Work has already begun at the five-acre Altair site in Altrincham town centre, with the demolition of Oakfield House earlier this year.

But further building work on the site will be hindered by the two buildings.

A Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the buildings was made in December 2009, but negotiations with both businesses have stalled and last week it was announced that a public inquiry would be held.

Representatives from ATS Euromaster and The Bridge Inn will come face-to-face with Trafford Council and Nikal at the two-day public inquiry at Trafford Town Hall in June.

The Planning Inspectorate is expected to make a decision by September.

Trafford Council and Nikal welcomed the news of the inquiry as they believe it will bring the Altair development - which will include a permanent ice rink, apartments, office space, shops, restaurants, a boutique hotel and car parking - closer.

Nick Gerrard, Trafford Council's corporate director for economic growth and prosperity, said: "I am pleased we now have a date for this inquiry as this means we are one step closer to being able to secure key parts of this scheme and a hugely exciting development for Altrincham."

But, if the Bridge Inn is demolished then landlord Lee Rawlins will lose both his job and his home.

Lee, who has worked at the pub for seven years, said he was unhappy about the plans and wanted the developers to build around the pub.

“This is about the only old pub left in Altrincham. I wouldn’t be happy moving and I’d be upset if the building was knocked down.

Albert Jones and Gary Walker are pub regulars who have been frequenting the Bridge Inn for over 20 years.

They plan to campaign against any plans to demolish the building and said working men’s pubs should be protected.

Gary said:”It’s a brilliant community pub and it’s one of the only pubs in Altrincham.

Altrincham-based Petros Developments, who own the Bridge Inn, and ATS Euromaster were unavailable for comment.
