A FLIXTON grandmother and Royal family enthusiast has knitted her own tribute to the Royal wedding - and Urmston shoppers have had the first glimpse.

The knitted wedding scene, which includes ham and lettuce sandwiches, jam tarts, bunting and of course, a big white dress, is on display in the window of HMK Wools on Flixton Road.

But despite its attention to detail - which has impressed passing shoppers - the scene took 73-year-old Brenda Lane, from Balmoral Road, just one week to knit.

Brenda, who volunteers in the wool shop and has been knitting for more than 65 years, decided she wanted to do something bright to cheer people up, whilst also commemorating the wedding.

One of Brenda’s earliest memories of the Royal family is of the Queen’s wedding to Prince Philip in 1947, when she went to a street party on Keswick Avenue in Flixton - and she has been a fan ever since.

She has toured Buckingham Palace, been to Balmoral in Scotland and visits London each year to watch the Trooping the Colour ceremony.

Brenda has also met several members of the Royal family, including Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who she spoke to when he opened The Lowry in 2000.

Alongside Prince William’s navy blue suit and Kate Middleton’s white dress, Brenda knitted a pale pink bridesmaid’s dress and bunting.

She also knitted food including sandwiches, fruit, batenburg cakes, a swiss roll, jam tarts and tiny fondants and a wedding cake - which she placed around a tin commemorating Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s engagement.

Sharon Berkley, owner of HMK Wool, said:”I think it’s wonderful. It’s the best display that we have ever had and so many people have been stopping and having a look.

“It brings a big smile to the kids when they see it.”
