ALTRINCHAM beer lovers will now be able to sample locally brewed beer in a new town centre bar.

After struggling to find Trafford pubs who were not tied to large brewerys to sell their locally brewed beer, Dunham Massey Brewery decided to open their own bar.

Father and son business partners John and Anthony Costello are looking forward to selling beer brewed at their brewery to Altrincham residents when their bar Costellos, on Goose Green, opens today (December 9).

The pair, who live in Warrington, have been successfully brewing ale at their Oldfield Lane brewery behind Big Tree Farm in Dunham Massey, since 2006.

John, 52, came up with the idea for his own brewery over a decade ago when Tetley Walker's in Warrington, where he had worked for a number of years, closed down and today Dunham Massey Brewery has more than 17 different beers to its name.

The brewery plan to sell six of their beers in Costellos at any time and are also in the process of brewing their first ever lager - after discovering that the water in Altrincham is very similar to the water in Pilsner in the Czech Republic - which in-keeping with their other beers, they plan to name after Altrincham.

Other beers brewed at Dunham Massey Brewery include Dunham Dark, Dunham Light, Stamford Bitter, Big Tree Bitter and Deer Beer, after the deer at Dunham Massey.

Anthony, 24, will take charge of Costellos while John continues to work at the brewery.

John said the pair had no intention of setting up a huge empire but just wanted to sell their beer locally.

“We are brewing beer that the local community want to drink and we are only setting up a bar because we can’t sell it to pubs in Altrincham,” he said.
