Much-lauded by Clint Boon on XFM, and one of the few unsigned bands to attract regular radio play on the station, north Manchester-based band The Children have been going from strength to strength since they formed in 2004. They just keep getting better and its no wonder that they have attracted such a loyal following, which was out in full force on Tuesday night.

Their distinctive sound pays homage to The Doors and there are shades of The Coral and The Zutons to be heard, but that's not to say that they are sound-alikes. The band has carved out their own sound and frontman Ben Carcamo has a beguiling and captivating voice, which belies his youth. The musicianship and talent in the band is also undeniable, the standout track of the night is House of Cards, and is a definite crowd pleaser. Labyrinth too is a joy to listen to.

And its not only Manchester that has fallen for their charms, Paul Weller was passed a demo by Clint Boon and attended a few of the band's London dates, and was so impressed that he invited them down to record in his private studio. They've just returned from the recording session, and plan to return in the next few weeks, after the current spate of gigs, to continue recording their new material.

Considering all this interest and obvious talent, it's a crime that The Children are unsigned, but this surely can't last for long as the words spreads. Keep an eye on them.
