MIKE Davis of Sale (Readers' write, May 27) draws attention to the Stepford Wives tendency among New Labour MPs, who accept the belief that they are there to support the Government, not to represent their constituents.

I would, however, like to reassure him that the Conservative MP for Altrincham and Sale West has been fighting hard to stop the closure of wards at Altrincham General.

I met the chairman of the hospital trust to ask her to reverse the plans to close wards and wrote to the Secretary of State asking him to intervene to stop the closure. I also spoke in the House of Commons, criticising the Trust.

However, I am very concerned that the authority may simply 'rubber stamp' closure on grounds of 'urgent financial pressures' and would welcome the support of any SAM readers who would be prepared to write to the Health Authority demanding that no closures go ahead without local people being consulted.
