AS reported in SAM on May 20, the RSPCA finds itself in an impossible situation when asked to help with species not indigenous to Britain.
Under current legislation it is illegal to release them into the wild, therefore if an injured one is captured the RSPCA is unable to admit it to a wildlife hospital for treatment because we would be unable to release it later.
Unfortunately, the RSPCA just does not have the facilities to care for these creatures in captivity. The Society is in any case opposed to long term confinement.
The situation leaves the RSPCA with a dilemma, but it cannot break the law. If readers believe a change in legislation is needed, they could consider writing to their MP.
