Ashley CC

THREE cheers for Ashley at the weekend, as Malpas 1st and 2nd teams were dismissed for a total of 100 runs, and Ashley lost just two wickets as both teams recorded 20 points wins.

At home Jon Griffiths asked Malpas to bat and they were soon 8 for 3.

The remaining batsmen convinced themselves that the pitch was difficult to bat on and threw their wickets away with gusto, collapsing to 27 for 9.

The last pair added 11 more, before Gary Tyms followed up last weeks three ball innings with a three ball bowling spell; wide, one run, wicket.

To show how difficult the pitch was the winning run was scored in the 10th over, and the players were showered, shaved and shampooed by 5pm.

After winning the toss second team captain Biffa Edwards elected to field in the second team game, and his bowlers made light work of some ordinary batting.

Dave Jackson and Chris Pendlebury took a wicket each in their 10 overs,

conceding 8 and 5 runs respectively, Brian Birtles (4for 23) and Peter Roberts (3 for 16) finished the job off as Malpas were dismissed for 60.

Jackson also took an outstanding catch in the gully, and Roberts and Pendlebury displayed excellent teamwork to run out top-scorer Bradley.

Liam O'Doherty was dismissed for 18 but his brother Cieran (13) joined Bryn Maddick (26) and they batted with caution on a low and slow wicket to see Ashley home in the 38th over.

Two superb performances from Ian Carruthers and Nigel Bull were not enough to give the 3rd XI a victory on Sunday.

Grappenhall were crusing at 90 for 2 before Bull was brought on and he ran through the order to take 7 for 15.

Ashley had 48 overs to score 160, but only Ian Carruthers with an undefeated 73 was able to dominate, he also took two stumpings thus spending the whole game on the pitch.

25 were needed on the last over, but it proved to be a tall order and they had to settle for a losing draw.
