SUMMER is upon us - and that means added risks for motorists.

For the change in season sees sneaky criminals on the lookout for extra opportunities to strike while drivers revel in the heat by leaving sun roofs open and windows wound down.

Pc Paul Berry, community safety officer at Stretford, warns: "The warm weather leads to drivers taking greater risks when they pop into shops or while the car is parked. Basic vehicle security goes out of the window with the sunshine."

Paul also points out that there are also increased risks for people who use caravans or roof racks when they travel to other parts of the country on holiday.

"People should remember not to leave items on roof racks unattended for any length of time and to hide any expensive property in their cars either in the boot or the glove compartment," he says.

"People who tow caravans, trailers or boats should also ensure that they are fitted with security and marked so they are easily identifiable - especially when in a strange environment in another area of the country.

"These possesions are major purchases for most people so look after them and make sure they are covered by insurance in case of a problem."

His main message is to remember that thieves can strike at any time and any place - and just one car window left open for a couple of minutes can lead to heartache.

"In short, think security before you start to enjoy the summer sun - or rain."
