A SCHOOLBOY from Flixton has made police and council officials sit up and take notice with advice on how to improve our roads.

John Malone,10, of Lynmouth Avenue, is the Road Safety Officer at English Martyrs Primary School in Flixton. He has written a letter to Greater Manchester Police and Trafford Borough Council to highlight a dangerous zebra crossing near his home.

The crossing at the junction of Church Road and Snowdon Avenue has been singled out by John because he felt it was dangerously positioned at the busy junction.

He said there were a lot of parked cars blocking the view for pedestrians, and cars travelled too fast down the road. In addition to this, there were no signs warning drivers about the crossing.

John said: "I think something should be done before we have a tragic accident on the crossing."

Josie Wride, Trafford Council's Road Safety Officer, said: "We will be investigating the points he has made as soon as possible."

"We appreciate it when young people take the time to look into matters like this and it's good that they are aware of these issues. John will get a reply in due course."

Steve, John's dad, said his son was always quite sensible. He said: "I had never noticed a problem with the crossing, but John mentioned it to me after he had been to visit a friend on the other side of Church Road."

John is the first boy to be the school's Road Safety Officer in five years. He said: "It was just a case of being good at school!"
