LISTENERS to the BBC Radio 4 'Them and Us' debate broadcast in January will have heard SOS spokesman Chris Taylor clearly state that what Trafford needs is a fair 11-plus selection system.

After making this statement, how can he criticise the STEP campaign. The SOS group should say publicly what they believe should be done about the unfairness of the 11-plus instead of hiding behind a smoke screen of allegations. If they cannot, they should stop their negative campaign and support the petition so that Trafford parents can have a vote.

The Trafford STEP campaign agrees that the 11-plus is unfair. However, we believe that there is no alternative method of selection that would be fair and there is no sound educational reason to justify dividing children into two groups at this age.

Any method that labels two-thirds of children as failures will inevitably produce injustices.

Chris Roberts, secretary, Trafford STEP.
