RESIDENTS of a narrow cul-de-sac in Sale are still in dispute with council chiefs about grass verges outside their homes.

For the neighbours in Salcombe Close say that they have been campaigning for almost two years to have the verges removed so that access can be improved.

The problem was highlighted in SAM in February 1999 when one local resident organised a petition.

But nothing has come of the complaints and now they are calling for Trafford Council to look again at their concerns.

The road itself is so narrow that when one car is parked in the road, access is difficult for others.

And this is a particular problem for one resident who uses a wheelchair and can only get out with the help of door-to-door transport.

Ken Occleston lives with three others in a shared house and is helped by council social workers.

He told SAM: "We have had so many problems trying to get out and about that it almost makes you wonder why you bother.

"The bin wagons have to drive up the verges and this has made the area muddy and uneven."

Locals have pushed the council to consider the provision of a parking area because of the hazard to young children and the problem that could arise if emergency vehicles needed to get down the road - but they say that they have had no joy.

In response, the director of Engineering and Planning at Trafford Council Angus McIntyre told SAM: "A strategy to address the issue of parking on grass verges on narrow residential roads is currently in hand.

"Residents can be assured that the concerns expressed will be considered as part of that strategy."
