ALTRINCHAM Grammar School for Girls has set new A level standards for Trafford this year.

The school's results are some of the best in the country, with A and B grades making up almost 80 per cent of all results.

Sixth form head teacher Wendy Gilpin said: "We are delighted. The girls and staff have worked very hard to achieve this.

"A lot of girls got straight A's, but there are a lot of pupils who have achieved real personal success with B's and C's.

"I would like to congratulate them all."

The school had eight successful Oxbridge candidates, with several girls gaining five A's.

The neighbouring boys' school also had its best ever results, with more than 50 per cent of grades at A or B. Their star pupil was Andrew Bellhouse, who gained five grade A passes as well as one of the top five Maths results in the country.

Sale Grammar School's deputy headteacher, David Wilson, said the school was "very pleased" with its results.

He said: "We have increased our proportion of A and B grades since last year - it is the highest proportion for some time."

Wellington School was also celebrating after its first major set of A level students received their results.

The technology college entered 40 students for the exams, and they passed 104 A levels between them.

Head teacher John Watson said: "I'm delighted with the results. These students were deemed to be failures at 11 Plus level."
